GET BETTER / ALL WEATHER

fitness class for regular-ass new yorkers

in Jackson Heights (in ALL weather)

About 15+ years ago I made a class called "Get Better" and ran it out of the basement of a surf shop in Williamsburg. The name was a joke about the flippant hallmark card-type response to being ill or feeling bad. It grew, mostly with my friends, their friends and eventually their friends’ friends. It was about remembering our bodies want to be strong, agile  and mobile and like being with other bodies. And It was really fun. It made us all feel better, and we got better as a consequence. And I miss it. So I’m starting it back up to see where it wants to go.

Cut to right now – through marriage, kids and career shifts, an older and wiser version of myself is still moving to get better, with more compassion for our aging bodies and with a driving need to be outside more. Introducing Get Better / All Weather!

We don’t need anymore NYTimes articles citing the necessity and benefit to being outside more. We get it. Developing climate resilience is just a perk. We are outside for more than just fresh air. We are because we need to be, because rain is just water, and cold just means wearing the right stuff. The positive impact of being outside on your health is REAL. So let’s be brave, like our kids are, and go outside to play!

Beginning September 10th

Tuesdays 6:00 - 7:00 pm, Fridays 8:00 - 9:00 am
At Travers Park

$15 per class or $80 for 8 classes

Things to Know

  • This isn't a bootcamp, nobody is going to yell at you and we don’t care about six-packs
  • It is exercise, sometimes with weights or bands or foam rollers
  • We are outside every class unless there's some crazy storm or dangerous conditions.
  • There is music most of the time (suggestions welcome)
  • We come to get stronger, more mobile and because moving with (new) friends is more fun

It looks something like this

  • Arrive, say hi to your new friends
  • Group warm up : core, joint mobility, spinal articulation
  • Mobility training: hips and shoulder tending
  • Strength work/ station rotations: overhead presses, hi-knees, rows… etc
  • Raise the heart rate and sweat, move across space: lateral runs, skips, split jumps
  • Cool down, say goodbye: lengthening and integrating stretches
  • Feel better and end your day on a good note or start your day on a good note
